The Indian Army is establishing a new military station in Assam’s Dhubri district to strengthen security and intelligence operations along the Indo-Bangladesh border. The Lachit Borphukan Military Station, located at Bamunigaon about 40 km from the international border, will be the first such Army facility in western Assam.
The foundation stone for the station was laid last week by Lieutenant General R.C. Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, during his visit to forward areas. Defence officials said the base will operate under the Tezpur-based 4 Corps and is expected to enhance operational capabilities and border vigilance in the region.
Defence spokesperson Lt Col. Mahendra Rawat said the station would significantly improve security infrastructure and instill confidence among the local population. The facility, being built with pre-fabricated structures for faster completion, will accommodate around 1,200 to 1,500 personnel. A para-commando unit will also be deployed at the site.
According to defence experts, the new military station holds special strategic importance amid concerns over cross-border crimes, extremist activities, and the prevailing situation in Bangladesh. Brigadier (retd) Ranjit Kumar Borthakur said the base would help strengthen the Army’s human and signal intelligence network across the sensitive western frontier of Assam.
He also noted potential strategic challenges posed by Bangladesh’s caretaker government and its growing engagement with Pakistan, particularly in the context of the Siliguri Corridor — the 22-km-wide stretch connecting the Northeast with the rest of India.
